A modern lottery or sports betting platform is no longer a single application. Web channels, physical terminals, back-end systems, dynamic test data, and time-dependent business processes must work together reliably. This makes testing considerably more complex – and makes effective test automation increasingly important.
The digitalization of the lottery and betting industry has significantly increased the complexity of its underlying IT environments. From a player’s perspective, the process may appear simple: select a game, place a bet, check the result, and collect any winnings. Behind that journey, however, multiple applications, sales channels, interfaces, and central systems may participate in a single transaction.
Testing therefore needs to verify more than individual components. It must establish whether the complete business process works consistently across interconnected systems. An automated test might begin at a physical sales terminal and subsequently verify the transaction in a central or back-office system. Another process may involve online betting, central processing, settlement, and back-end verification as parts of one end-to-end scenario.
This system-level perspective is especially important in an industry where security and integrity are fundamental. The World Lottery Association’s WLA-SCS:2024 includes controls specifically covering gaming-system testing and states that security testing should reflect how a system will be deployed in production.
Many conventional business applications can be tested repeatedly with predefined static data. Lottery and sports betting systems are different. A sports betting test, for example, may require an available pre-match, live, or virtual sports event. That event changes state over time. Test data that is valid now may no longer be usable when the same test executes later.
Number games introduce another form of time dependency. An end-to-end scenario may begin with placing a bet, continue through the draw or settlement, and finish with prize verification or payout.
As a result, a business-process test may sometimes extend across hours or even days. Effective automation therefore needs to do more than execute predefined steps. It may need to generate suitable test data, create prerequisites, manage changing states, and continue verification at the appropriate point in the business lifecycle.
Test-data governance is also an industry concern. WLA-SCS:2024 addresses test methodology and restrictions around using current production draw data and personal information, while its Code of Practice discusses generated and appropriately transformed test data as possible approaches.
Testing becomes more complicated when physical sales terminals are part of the process. In this case, the test environment extends beyond application software. Hardware, operating systems, peripherals, scanning functions, and automation drivers can all affect execution.
Introducing a new terminal generation therefore requires more than functional verification. Organizations may also need to determine whether their existing automated regression suite remains compatible with the new environment.
ProofIT is currently investigating the automated testability of new-generation terminal environments at Szerencsejáték Ltd. The objective is to create an architecture that could support a test laboratory partially separated from physical devices, making the environment easier to scale.
The challenge is not necessarily the absolute number of test cases. During complex regression testing, the same business processes may need to be validated repeatedly across different games, terminal types, configurations, releases, and environmental states.
The major advantage of automation is therefore not simply speed. It is reproducibility. The same business process can be executed according to consistent rules across multiple environments and execution machines.
In ProofIT’s lottery-industry projects, automated execution has enabled some regression processes to run approximately 10–15 times faster than corresponding real-time or manual testing approaches. This can create substantial value during release validation, when teams need reliable results within a limited testing window.
Effective automation does not mean eliminating every manual test. Some activities still depend on human judgment. These might include aspects of physical installation, usability, or visual inspection where the result cannot be evaluated reliably through objective automated criteria alone.
The objective should therefore be to automate repeatable, deterministic, and objectively verifiable processes, allowing specialists to concentrate their expertise where human assessment creates greater value.
This balance is particularly important in complex environments. Poorly selected automation can create maintenance overhead without significantly improving release confidence.
One of the most important benefits of test automation is the additional confidence it can provide before a new version goes live. The automated regression environment used at Szerencsejáték Zrt. does not focus exclusively on individual components. Over the years, it has identified issues across web, terminal, and back-office areas during release validation.
In a typical release cycle, automatically identifying even one or two substantive defects or deviations can provide significant value when those issues are discovered before production deployment. This is where test automation moves beyond operational efficiency.
Its purpose is not simply to execute more tests. It is to provide repeatable evidence that critical business processes continue to work across changing systems and releases.
ProofIT has worked with Szerencsejáték Ltd. on test automation since 2014. During that period, the automation environment has evolved from its initial tests into a complex solution capable of verifying number lottery games, scratch cards, terminal processes, online systems, and associated end-to-end business processes.
The experience highlights an important lesson. In lottery systems, the hardest problem is rarely automating a screen. The greater challenge is ensuring that the correct test data is available at the right time and then following a business transaction reliably across multiple systems – from the initial bet through central processing and back-end verification. That is where well-designed test automation can deliver meaningful business value.
Complex lottery and betting environments require automation that can handle dynamic data, multiple channels, physical devices, time-dependent processes, and end-to-end verification.
ProofIT has proven references in the automated testing of complex, business-critical systems in the lottery industry. Our test automation expertise supports the verification of demanding business processes from test design and data preparation through automated execution and result evaluation.
